Media Relations in Toronto
Media relations is the part of PR that earns attention rather than buys it. It is the work of understanding what a journalist, editor or producer actually needs, developing stories worth their time, and putting your brand in front of the audiences that matter.
Chimera Collective is a senior-led PR agency based in Toronto, with national reach. Media relations sits at the centre of what we do, and it is where most of our client programs begin.
What media relations delivers
Earned coverage does something advertising cannot. When a journalist chooses to write about your brand, that decision carries their credibility with it; you are not simply reaching an audience. You are earning a place in a conversation they already trust.
- ✓Credibility. Third-party endorsement from outlets your audience already trusts.
- ✓Relevance. A place in the cultural conversation your brand is trying to be part of.
- ✓Relationships. Media contacts who know your brand before you need them, which matters as much on a quiet month as on a launch.
- ✓Assets that keep working. Coverage lives on in search results, on your site, in decks and in social content long after the publication date.
How we approach media relations
Every program is built around the objective, not around a template. In practice, the work usually moves through five stages.
- 1Story development. We start with your business, your audience and your category, then find the angles that are genuinely newsworthy. Not everything a brand wants to say is a story, and part of our job is being honest about the difference.
- 2Media strategy. We map the outlets, sections, journalists and moments that matter for your objectives, across Toronto, Canada and North America depending on the mandate.
- 3Pitching. Tailored, relationship-led outreach. No mass distribution, no recycled media list.
- 4Securing and managing coverage. Briefing documents, spokesperson prep, samples, imagery, interviews and follow-through, so the opportunity is not lost between the yes and the published piece.
- 5Amplification. Coverage is not the finish line. We help you use it across social, on your site and with your sales and partnership teams.
Our approach is highly specific. We don’t blast pitches or rely on oversized media lists. We become experts in the journalists we pitch: their work, their interests and what matters to their audience. Every pitch has a reason for landing in a particular inbox.
Why earned media matters more than ever
As AI changes how people discover brands and information, credible earned media matters more than ever. The stories written about your brand don’t just shape reputation, they increasingly shape what search engines and AI platforms understand, surface and say about you. That makes strong media relations both a reputation strategy and a discoverability strategy.
How we measure and report
We do not guarantee placements in named outlets, and we would be cautious of any agency that does. What we do commit to is clarity about what the work is achieving.
Having worked with global companies where measurement standards are high, reporting has become one of our specialties. We go beyond counting coverage to understand its quality, relevance and impact and, importantly, what the results tell us about where to go next.
Better together: how media relations and influencer marketing work hand-in-hand
We treat PR and content as one craft rather than two. Earned coverage offers proof points and a reason to be talked about, while content keeps that momentum going between media moments.
That means media relations can run on its own, or as part of a broader program alongside influencer marketing, editorial strategy, events and content production. We also have our own content studio in Prince Edward County, so the imagery and assets a campaign needs can be produced in-house, with the communications strategy already in mind.

Who we work with
We do our strongest work in categories where reputation, taste and aesthetics carry weight. Our client partners have included blue-chip category leaders across the tech, fashion, luxury, wellness and apparel landscapes.
Mandates range from an ongoing media relations retainer through to focused support around a launch, an event or a specific cultural brand moment.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between media relations and PR?
Media relations is one part of PR. It covers everything to do with earning editorial attention: story development, media strategy, pitching, interviews and the relationships behind the coverage. PR is the wider discipline, and can also include brand positioning, content, influencer relations, events, partnerships and reputation management.
Can you guarantee coverage in a specific publication?
No, and we would be wary of any agency that says it can; the only way to guarantee coverage is to pay for it, via sponsored content (paid editorial-style content created or published by a media outlet on behalf of a brand) or a paid ad. Editorial decisions sit with journalists and editors. What we can do is find the strongest version of your story, take it to the right people at the right time, and be clear with you about what is realistic from the outset.
How long does media relations take to show results?
It depends on the story, the category and the media cycle, and sometimes a little bit of luck. A strong launch or timely story can generate coverage quickly, while building sustained visibility and relationships with the outlets that matter takes longer. We think about media relations as building momentum over time, rather than chasing a burst of coverage and disappearing.
Do you only work with Toronto brands?
No. We are based in Toronto and know the Canadian media landscape exceptionally well, but our mandates regularly extend across Canada, into the US and sometimes globally. The right media strategy follows your audience, not your postal code. We also have a sister agency in Paris, France, and thanks to our international experience, can advise on campaigns that are global in scope.
Can media relations be combined with content or influencer work?
Absolutely. Earned media creates credibility, influencer work builds relevance and content keeps the story moving. We can scope media relations on its own, but many of our programs bring these disciplines together under one strategy.
